Preventing Tooth Decay
How are cavities made? When we eat sugar, it creates a reaction with the bacteria that is already in our mouths, causing it to produce acids. These acids break down the hard minerals of our teeth, forming holes also known as cavities. The problem is escalated by the fact that decay is a progressive disease. The problem will continue to worsen if not taken care of. One of our dentists, Dr. Lugo, Dr. Kramar, Dr. Sadler, and Dr. Farmer can remove the decay and fill the tooth, preventing further damage. Using a variety of filling options, we restore the tooth to a healthier state.
How do we protect our child from cavities? At Puget Sound Pediatrics, we can help your child avoid cavities. More and more, we are seeing children reach adulthood without ever experiencing a cavity, and we attribute this to education and some techniques that we can provide.
Ways you can prevent tooth decay include:
|•||The first, and most important step to protecting your child's teeth is to set up a strict daily dental hygiene regimen: we ask parents to assist their children in brushing and flossing twice a day, they need your help until at least 8 years of age|
|•||Schedule regular dental cleanings, this is when our hygienist can show your child tips|
|•||Schedule regular dental checkups, this allow us to check their teeth, and it also allows us to develop a good relationship with the child, promoting positive dentistry for their future|
|•||Control your child's diet, if they eat sugar, have them drink water or brush to clear away the sugar|
|•||Inquire abut fluoride, is it in your water? in your toothpaste?|
|•||Ask us about dental sealants, sealing your child's teeth from decay will make a significant difference|
|•||Be aware of what non-food items your child puts in their mouths, thumbs, pacifiers, toys, bottle nipples, and more all have bacteria|
By practicing good hygiene habits, you can help your child avoid unhealthy teeth and costly treatment. Our dentists care about the health of your children's teeth. We know how important it is for your children to want to come to the dentist, we provide an environment for them that they will ask you when they can come back. With three easily accessible locations, we are always in your neighborhood.
